BREAKING NEWS: "It's Not Only Akara!" — Oluremi Tinubu Clarifies ₦100 Million Empowerment Scheme in Jigawa State.
### The First Lady Fires Back
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has stated that the Federal Government will not be intimidated or discouraged by public criticism and social media backlash regarding its economic empowerment initiatives.
Speaking on Monday in Hadejia, Jigawa State, during the inauguration of the newly built Abubakar Maje Haruna Hall at the Emir's Palace, the First Lady addressed the intense online controversy surrounding her previous remarks about supporting micro-businesses.
"I know people have been saying I mentioned only akara. It is not only akara. We also have tomato sellers, boli (roasted plantain) sellers, and those selling pepper and vegetables in our markets. We will continue to empower them... We are not intimidated by wrong reports." — Senator Oluremi Tinubu
### The Context Behind the Backlash
The controversy erupted after an earlier speech where the First Lady highlighted government interventions for ultra-small-scale entrepreneurs, referencing local ventures like akara (bean cakes), roasted corn, and kuli-kuli. Critics on social media quickly dragged the comments, arguing that promoting petty trading downplayed the severe economic realities and hardships currently facing citizens.
The Presidency later stepped in to defend the remarks, with presidential spokesman Sunday Dare stating the message was misunderstood and intended to highlight the dignity, resilience, and economic importance of Nigeria's massive informal business sector.
### ₦100 Million Grassroots Grant Deployed
To back her words with action, the First Lady announced that under her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), a ₦100 million business recapitalization fund has been provided directly to Jigawa State.
- The Scope: The financial intervention targets 2,000 women petty traders across the state.
- The Payout: Each vetted beneficiary will receive a direct grant of ₦50,000 cash to expand their existing market stalls and ensure their trades remain sustainable.
The First Lady insisted that despite the media noise, the real grassroots beneficiaries heavily appreciate the support, and the administration remains fully committed to boosting household income at the very bottom of the economic ladder.
